I’m not going to lie…being in show choir was probably one of the coolest things I’ve done in my young life. Nevermind the blue sequins and jazz hands…it was still a lot of fun and some of the best memories I have from high school.
So good, in fact, that when I went off to college, I wanted to be a music teacher when I grew up. The dream is still there years later…there are times I wish I had gone on to credential and direct a program of my own. Perhaps even having my own show choir. And I could do it too…if I wanted to…
There are a lot of things I attribute to my not pursuing my education certification. Budget cuts. Low wages. Bureaucracy. But one of the biggest reasons I think I jumped out when I had the chance was the school environment. School is a lot different these days compared to when I was in school. Kids have absolutely NO respect for teachers at all. I could write an entire blog about this and what I think the breakdown is and all the problems are. I could write about how all my friends that are teachers are stressed and discouraged because of the discipline problems they have in the classroom and how learning and teaching just isn’t fun anymore (except in those rare circumstances). But I won’t do that. What I will say is that violence in schools and anywhere else for that matter can happen anywhere…even in small, sleepy, country towns. Like where I grew up.
And this is what I woke up to this morning.
