Despite the better offers from Cleveland, Trevor Hoffman has decided to stay with the Friars and has signed a two-year $13.5 million contract to play for the Padres.
Yes, but, they got rid of Hernandez, Loretta, Burroughs, and (I’m pretty sure) Sweeney.
Granted, Burroughs didn’t really come through this season, but based on his past performance, he’s fairly valuable. Ditching Loretta is a huge mistake; he’s been a big asset ever since he signed.
Not very smart of the Pads, now, is it? All this to get a pitcher from the D-Rays with an era of 7.something? You’d think that Towers & Bochy would have learned something from the disastrous 2002-2003 seasons, given the team’s dismal history of relief/pitching “talent”. And going through something like 30 pitchers in a season.
According to an article on padres.com, Bochy said “we’re givimg him [the new pitcher] a chance to perform.” Fat chance, Pads. Haven’t you learned your lesson yet? Gambling has never paid off for this club. Don’t bet.
