Alright friends, this is probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever been excited about in a long time. I’m sure those of you in the know already know…but here it is…my official endorsement for Skype.
“What is Skype,” you may be asking yourselves. “And why should I be excited about it?”
The answer is simple.
Skype is a multi-dimensional messaging system. That sounds fancy and technologically advanced, but I just worded it that way to sound intelligent. It really is the future of communications. With Skype, you can instant message, file transfer, and make online phone calls. You can conference call or conference chat depending on your needs.
And the best part…it’s free. That’s right, free.
You download this program on your computer, provided your PC meets the minimum system requirements, and you are set to communicate with the world. It works best, of course, when more people are using the system; Brian and myself downloaded and set up the program on our machines and were instantly able to text message AND voice message. The voice messaging is just like talking on phone…but better and clearer. I was able to speak on my laptop’s microphone and hear myself on Brian’s speakers with crystal clear clarity. But the best part is that it was free…just like a telephone, but better.
The greatest advantage, of course, is for those people with friends and relatives miles away. For instance, I could communicate vocally with my friends overseas…for nothing at all…provided they have the Skype software and a microphone on their computers.
I see this eventually replacing conventional telephone services because you can do so much more with Skype.
For more information, visit www.skype.com and download Skype for the love of Mike. The more people that are on it, the more we can all call each other and communicate on the web.
Another great feature is that it’s another way people can ignore me and another way for girls not to return my phone calls. :)
So download it…add me (proudestmonkey619). Later.
**Update**
Thanks to trusty Josh, I almost forgot to mention some of the additional features of Skype that are cool, but that cost a little money.
When I say little, I mean little. Like, think Gary Coleman.
With Skype, you can make calls to landlines or cell phones from the internet, for a small fee. Additionally, Skype can provide you with voicemail service and an actual telephone number, depending on if you are going to be replacing your conventional phone service. I tell you, it’s the future! :)
Well, making internet-to-landline calls isn’t free, but very affordable. $.02 per minute in the US.
There’s a build available for Gentoo, so I’ll have to try it . . . as soon as I get a headset w/mic, that is. :)
Ah yes, thanks for pointing this out…I almost forgot to mention this…I’ll update…
