Ingress. Egress. Portal. Hatchway. It’s funny how we take these things for granted. But I opened my bedroom door tonight to get some water and I was like, “Wow, I have a door.”

For the past few weeks, I was without door. Rather, a door that didn’t close. When we moved in, my bedroom door was sort of hard to close and then just recently, the knob came right off, forcing me to perform a MacGyver-esque maneuver in order to escape the confines of my sleeping chamber. This maneuver was quite familiar in my mind, as I performed a similar tactic back in 2000 when someone locked their keys in their room whilst lodging in the PLNU Alumni House. Back then, I rifled through a desk and I utlized a rubber band and a paperclip to succesfully disengage the lock. As I worked, with a collegue looking on in admiration, I hummed the MacGyver theme song. :) But this time, those materials weren’t available to me. Nor, did I have any duct tape. I had to be creative…

But the main point of this story is that I opened the door to get water; and as I turned the knob, I appreciated the fact that it opened and closed with the greatest of ease. I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. It was cool. So a huge thank you to our great landlords for repairing my knob. I can now sleep with piece of mind, and without having to jam my flip flop underneath as a reverse door stop. I tell you, it’s the little things…

I realized that I am a lot like love. Aaron and love…synonymous. Or wait, am I a lot like justice? Anyway, I am a lot like love and justice, which are both supposedly blind. I came in tonight with the usual crap I tote around, and as I walked through the house I switched off the lights. I stopped at the light before my bedroom and listened to my messages, er, message (singular, since no one calls me) and it was Danny’s mom saying they were going to come by and fix my door. Not putting two and two together, I thought, “Aww, well, that’s nice.” I switched off the light and proceeded to my room, not expecting my door to be fixed…or closed…which of course it was both. I smacked right into it. Good thing my face stopped me.

I’ve known her for over a year … and in that time, I think we’ve become close. I guess you could say we sort of have a relationship. It’s a love-hate relationship. I’m talking about my SUV. She doesn’t have a name, but she is dependable, loyal, and pretty. But seriously, does she have to [...]

I’m talking about my SUV. She doesn’t have a name, but she is dependable, loyal, and pretty.

But seriously, does she have to shock me every single time I touch her? I cringe every time I reach for the door handle … it’s really funny to see my face in the window reflection. But every single time … for the love … and it hurts too. Now I know what a DeLorean feels like with 1.21 gigawatts of electricity shooting through her.

Well, maybe not. I do tend to exaggerate things. But it was a good excuse to use a Back To The Future reference.

I can honestly say that I’m not surprised that our “honorable” Mayor Dick Murphy has been listed as one of the nation’s worst mayors by Time Magazine. In an excerpt from Time:

Dick Murphy / San Diego
When he was elected mayor in 2000, Dick Murphy thought he had his hands full dealing with a troubled ballpark project and sewer spills that were shutting down San Diego’s beaches. But then Murphy, 62, a state superior court judge, became embroiled in an even bigger mess: a $1.35 billion deficit at the city’s public-employee pension fund.

The crisis has so discredited him, he almost lost his job last November to Donna Frye, a last-minute write-in candidate who runs a surf shop. She actually won more votes, but some 5,500 people who wrote in her name failed to shade in an oval box, and the courts ruled the ballots invalid.

It was Murphy’s predecessor who first approved underfunding the pension fund. But when a balloon payment became due in 2002, Murphy dodged it by fashioning another underfunding plan, winning the pension board’s acceptance with a promise to hike pension payouts and give special benefits to the union presidents. Now the FBI, the U.S. Attorney and the SEC are investigating the deal.

Of course, all of this we know…we live here, after all. All I can say is this: I didn’t vote for him.

The other night, the boys of NGS, East got together for a good ‘ole fashioned meat and potatoes night. We grilled up some steaks, I made some smashed ‘taters, and we sat outside on our deck for hours, tossing back a couple cold ones and shootin’ the breeze. Good times.

During the course of the evening, I was posed an interesting question: who was my ideal girl? I thought for a few moments, sputtering out the same adjectives that have always come to mind in the past. But thinking about it more, I think my ideal girl has changed a bit. Only a little. I am finding things that would be more important in woman … things like being able to push me in ways, to encourage me to do things I normally wouldn’t do. More outgoing…adventurous. No longer do I go for the “cute, shy” type … although cuteness is important, I veer towards the cute, hot type; essentially, girls that are way out of my league (maybe that’s my problem, and why I am still single). I still am drawn to cute girls … but I think I am looking for a hot girl…the kind that doesn’t let on that she knows she’s hot. That’s a rare type, and the most attractive in my book.

I fell in love tonight. (I always say this, so I’m sure you’re used to it.) We took my grandma to Chili’s for her 87th birthday. We had a smashing time…and tons of food. :) But there was a girl sitting across the way … and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. She had gorgeous brown hair, a golden complexion, and a great smile. But her best feature was this; she took HUGE bites of her food. There’s nothing like watching a petite, hot girl shovelling salad into her mouth. Ooooh, so sexy.

And you do realize I am kidding. Actually, it was cute…she sort of reminded me of Jen H., a friend from college I had a crush on. Not that Jen shared the same eating habits, but that she was cute.

I slept most of the day away todady, but the portion I was conscious for was gorgeous.

Today was sad, but good. I did my usual work … Cyndi made brownies … and everyone was pretty much in a good mood, despite the events that were going to take place. We all went out to lunch together to the 94th Aero Squadron – the whole department – and it was good to just spend time with everyone.

After getting back to the office and working on a few rush files, it was 3:00 … and our scheduled move began. It took me the rest of the day to move all my stuff over to my new desk. It’s going to take some getting used to, but I think it will be okay.

Change is bad.

Here are some visuals:

This is my old desk, with everything in boxes.

This is my old desk with nothing in it…empty. Just like new.

And this is my new home, all set up and ready to go on Monday.

Our temp and good guy to know, Drew, also said goodbye, as his term with us ended. He was cool.

As Brian gets ready for Hawaii, we shot a little bit of league play this evening. I’ll put some video together tomorrow.

Here’s to the end of a long day …

It’s all good … I’m editing video anyway for the Maundy Thursday performance I was in. Sounds spectacular. Of course, I was singing in it, so that probably had something to do with it.

It seems like only yesterday I was moving … and now, I’m being forced to move again. Now, now, don’t worry … it’s not what you think.

On The Apprentice, The Donald, to shake things up a bit, does what he calls a “Corporate Reshuffle.” He does it to make the teams even, to make things run more smoothly. Executives like to do this now and again, for “efficiency,” don’t ask me why. It’s like a game of 52-card pickup…and the employees are the cards. Like the song says, it’s for the “almighty dollar.”

UBOC did a corporate reshuffle of sorts … so tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., I get a pack of my stuff and move to another desk. It’s not horrible; definitely not the end of the world. But we all know how well I deal with change. My boss, who I’ve worked with for three years, will not be my boss anymore; I’ll be working under a new manager. All the underwriters that I’ve worked with will be on the other side of the building, with only brief interactions when I have questions on a file. It’s like the end of an era; it’s the only work environment I’ve ever known since I started working for the bank. It’s definitely sad, but I know it’ll be okay. Aside from the sadness, I think the most annoying thing is having to move all my crap, which is quite plentiful.

On a happier note, Brian (being the lucky jerk that he is), will be heading to paradise on Sunday. He travels to the Hawaiian islands to participate in two bowling competitions; one in all Oahu and the other one in Honolulu (I believe-if I’m wrong, I’m sure he’ll correct me.) I had planned on going back when this scheme was conceived, but at the time I did not believe I had the financial resources to participate in such a venture. What a fool! Maybe next time. Tomorrow, I shadow Brian after work in some “practice time” in preparation for his upcoming tournaments. I hope to get some footage and a few words from the man himself, for NGS News.

Well, I’m off to dreamland. Peace.

One of the things I miss about living at NGS, West is the Thursday night post-Apprentice discussions. Brian and I would briefly dissect the episode and then, make determinations on who we thought would advance, or be cut the next week. Typically, I would have an idea – two or three – that I would like to see go all the way. However, I usually didn’t make my final call until after the final four and the interviews.

I am changing that right now.

Kendra Todd
Kendra Todd, a 26 year-old real estate broker from Florida, has caught my eye. (I’m 26 too…and dramatically less successful than she). She’s definitely way out of my league, but I’ve had my eye on her since the first episode of the season…mostly because she’s so damn cute. It’s that smile (always gets me in trouble). She has been a success, not only in her private life, but also on the show. And tonight’s contest was no different; single-handedly completing her group’s task by pulling an all-nighter. Most would have crumbled, but when her teammates went to bed for the night, she saw the project through its completion all by herself and did an amazing job too, receiving praise and admiration from the Pontiac/GMC execs. I’d like to give her some praise and admiration myself.

She’s come this far…and I think she can take it all the way to the end. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks. But Kendra is my pick for Apprentice 3.
